While the concern lies first and foremost with the people who have lost their homes and loved ones, wineries impacted by the California fires have something else to worry about: their wines. As wildfires tore through wine country in the last few weeks, buildings, barns, vineyards, wineries, homes and lives were completely destroyed.
Tourism is taking a huge hit, with many wineries and hotels reporting scores of cancellations from visitors who normally crowd the Valley during the fall months. Potential smoke damage to any unpicked grapes could cause a problem to future vintages, and the threat of smoke taint is real.
