The spirit of being a grape geek is always wanting to learn more about how and where wine grows and of course how that has an effect on the wine itself on our taste buds. For those interested in wines grown in volcanic soils, the book Volcanic Wines-Salt, Grit and Power written by MS John Szabo unpacks in detail volcanic wine making regions all over the globe.
One point of note I found very interesting is that Szabo points out that the vines grown in volcanic soil were not affected by the devastating phylloxera epidemic that ravaged vine worldwide during the 19th century.
Chocked full of gorgeous photographs and detailed analysis of volcanic wine growing regions, this book surely looks to educate as well as entertain, and will be on my reading list. Read more in this Forbes magazine article.
